Located high in the mountains of Northern Italy bordering Austria and Switzerland, the combination of a rich supply of wood and the long winter months in the Gardena Valley were the reason why many families began supplementing their agricultural living by selling their wood carvings. The long tradition of wood carving in this region began with the creation of toys and dolls.

The Mahlknecht family has been one of the famed valley's leading workshops in the art of wood carving for generations. All Pema carvings are made in their own workshops using their own designs. The many attempts to imitate the carvings bear witness to the great world-wide popularity and desirability of their work. They are made of selected mountain lindenwood dried and seasoned for years, sometimes decades, then meticulously painted and decorated by hand. Each piece is carefully re-checked before shipping.
